International awards, Maria Chiara Carrozza, full professor at The BioRobotics Institute, receives the 'Campano d'oro 2022', the prize in honour of former students of the University of Pisa

Maria Chiara Carrozza, full professor at The BioRobotics Institute, Sant'Anna School and President of Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), will receive the 'Campano d'oro 2022', the award instituted in 1971 by ALAP (Associazione Laureati Ateneo Pisano) in honour of former students of the University of Pisa who have distinguished themselves in the fields of culture, science, industry and the professions. The award ceremony took place on Thursday, 20 October, at 6 p.m. at the Palazzo 'La Sapienza' in Pisa.

The history of the award and the programme of the ceremony

The 'Campano d'oro' was created in 1971 when the Associazione Laureati Ateneo Pisano decided to award prizes to alumni who have distinguished themselves in the fields of culture, science, industry and the professions. The award depicts the Campano Tower located a few dozen metres from the Sapienza building. The name derives from an ancient bell that, from the Middle Ages until not so many years ago, marked the beginning and end of university lectures.
Over the past 51 years, the Campano d'oro has honoured illustrious personalities such as Mario Tobino, Carlo Rubbia, Tiziano Terzani and Salvatore Settis. Maria Chiara Carrozza succeeds Manuela Roncella, director of the Breast Centre at the Pisa University Hospital.

The ceremony programme includes institutional greetings by Paolo M. Mancarella, Rector of the University of Pisa, and Michele Conti, Mayor of Pisa, and the Laudatio by Paolo Dario, Professor Emeritus of the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna and winner of the 'Campano d'oro' in 2015.
